William Rose

William Rose

Medium: oil and charcoal

Artist Statement:

Since I began drawing and painting, most of my work has been figurative, with a nearly singular focus on the undeniable beauty and expressiveness I see in the female face.  Impossibly captivating eyes, the intense emotion conveyed in the slightest rise of an eyebrow or the corner of the mouth, a tiny tilt of the head or almost imperceptible shift in the lips or eyelids – this is what moves me to draw and paint.  The subjects I choose are not based on any formula or reasoning I can identify – it’s intuition at it’s most basic level and at times it’s overpowering.  The more frustratingly difficult it becomes for me to express in words what I hope to convey on canvas, the more convinced I become that I’m going to create something special.  And aside from the subject, ultimately it’s the light that grabs me.  When I’m able to capture a moment – a face or figure – in extraordinary light, I’m in.  When I’ve got the light – perfect light – it’s like a drug, an addiction I can’t walk away from.  These are the moments I dream about and strive to capture in paint.
